This workshop focuses on the fundamental principles essential to achieve a convincing three-dimensional representation of the human figure in oils. These principles are analyzed in a logical sequence of repetitive exercises, beginning with gesture and block-ins and continuing through to a four-day long pose with the opportunity to apply the principles practiced. We analyze light and its effect on the human form. The focus is on prioritizing the information unique to each stage, then establishing a cohesive balance between the use of abstract movements and shapes with structure and anatomy. Students have the option of using either a black-and-white palette or a limited-color palette. The option of a black-and-white palette gives students the opportunity to focus on just value and form. The workshop is highlighted with demonstrations of these methods and concepts accompanied by question and answer sessions. The workshop format accommodates students of all levels.
Instructor Stephen Early was chosen one of “12 Artists to Watch in 2012” by American Artist magazine. He earned an Exceptional Merit award in the Portrait Society of America’s 2012 international competition and was a faculty member at the society’s annual conference.
