Oil Painting: The Figure with Instructor Robin Frey

Under the guidance of Portrait Society of America 2008 Honor Award winner Robin Frey, the workshop begins with one-minute figure gestures and moves to starting a grisaille of the painting using burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and flake white. The grisaille is completed on the first day. On the second day, students lay in the color with a palette knife. The figure is broken down into flat shapes of light and shadow using color to key the light. Following this stage, the shapes are broken down into smaller shapes without losing the light and shadow patterns. Students are encouraged to continue using the palette knife until the shapes can only be managed with a paint brush. This workshop is designed for all levels, and is aimed at the student seeking to develop a painting in a cohesive manner.
