For Art Educators: Fundamentals of Portrait Painting with Natalie Italiano

 This workshop will begin with short studies analyzing the structure of the human head, providing the student with a foundation for portrait painting. Basic concepts and methods of figurative painting taught at Studio Incamminati will be covered including the monochromatic grisaille under painting, value thumbnails, limited palette studies and color studies. Simplified planes, anatomical landmarks, values, color relationships, edges and paint handling will be covered. Students will paint in a direct or alla prima method, utilizing both a limited and a full color palette, and will complete one to two portrait studies each day, culminating in a two day portrait. The instructor will demonstrate concepts daily, and assist students at their easels. This workshop is suitable for both the beginner and advanced painters.

Classes are open to all teachers, with middle and high-school teachers especially encouraged to apply; concepts for classroom use will be discussed daily. The content addresses Pennsylvania Academic and National Standards for Art Education and Pennsylvania teachers can earn30 hours of PDE Act 48 credits. New Jersey  teachers can earn state Continuing Education Credits.
